Time for some Raku

I have been busy over the past few months with trying out different ceramics. The form that I chose was lidded vessels. I love doing Raku firings as it is pretty fast and furious and the results can be a little un-predicatble at time. After laying my hands on a clay body that withstands the thermal shock really well I made some pieces. Here are the results.

Stone Monkey Ceramics Collectors Pots 2011

Well this year rather than just do one pot for auction I have done 12 for sale at a fixed price. Stone Monkey Ceramics presents:

“The Legend of 12 Monkeys”

Legend has it that many years ago a jealous and devious pot maker was envious that the potter Chojiro was bestowed the honour of making Chawan for the emperor Toyotomi Hideyoshi for use in the tea ceremony. Seething with anger the jealous potter trained 12 wily and devious monkey’s to go and steal the secrets of Chojiro’s Chawan making and bring the secrets back to him so that the jealous potter could learn Chojiro’s art.
The monkeys set off on their mission to find and bring back the secrets of the Chawan and being monkeys, were unorganised in how to go about getting the secrets that their master wanted. One monkey suggested that they sit and watch Chojiro making the Chawan so that they could learn the art and techniques that Chojiro employed and take the information back to their master. Another suggested that they steal some Chawan to take back so their master could see the techniques that Chojiro used. Undecided the monkeys spent a long time arguing when eventually they settled on the idea of stealing some Chawan to take back. Unbeknown to the monkeys the Chawan that Chojiro had made were already in the kiln ready to be fired.
Not knowing anything about the art of pot making the monkeys climbed into the kiln and each one grabbed hold of one Chawan to take back to their master. Monkeys being monkeys, they could not do the job without getting up to some mischief and they started to mess about with the Chawan distorting them and making holes in them so that they could never be used for the tea ceremony. All of a sudden the door of the kiln closed and the monkeys were trapped in Chojiro’s kiln to await their inevitable fate.
When Chojiro opened the kiln he found that twelve of his Chawan had a monkey fired to the side of the pot. Enraged and confused about how this could have happened, Chojiro was beside himself when looking at the Chawan he saw that there were holes in the bottom making them useless for the tea ceremony. Chojiro threw away all the pots into a hole in the ground and the pots remained buried hidden from view for centuries, until now…

Noelanders Trophy XII 2011

Here are a few shots from the Noelanders Trophy which was over this weekend just gone. Excellent trees, excellent venue, fantastic friends and excellent trading for the Stone Monkey. I had a chance to get around the exhibition early on the Sunday morning and the layout and quality of the trees were exemplary and very very professional. A huge huge thanks to all that put on this spectacular event and I will look forward to making the annual pilgrimage next year. Unfortunately due to being very busy trading I was unable to get the info on the owners of the trees. Anyway here are a few select shots for your viewing pleasure. I hope that you can enjoy the pictures of the trees as much as I enjoyed attending the event.

Regards

"The Tao of Bamboo" Stone Monkey Ceramics Collectors Pot 2009

This year’s collector’s pot from Stone Monkey Ceramics is entitled “The Tao of Bamboo” I was inspired by antique Chinese Pots that I saw from daily trips to the Victoria & Albert museum in London, just round the corner from where I do my day job.
As with last years collectors pot it will come in a bespoke handmade box with a silver Stone Monkey chop set in the lid. Here are a couple of taster pictures, more will follow prior to the release date of 01/10/09 see here for more details.
The box is made from Malaysian Jelutong wood and finished with a silver Stone Monkey in the lid. The colour change in the glaze round the pot depicts the rising and and setting of the sun showing different aspects of the Bamboo with two of the leaves on each panel in the beautiful plated 99.9%silver. Honourary Monkey

Yesterday I had a visitor all the way from sunny Scotland, Fiona. After a good curry on Tuesday night at Simon’s and a some good old Bonsai banter we visited a friends Bonsai garden then Fiona came to the Monkey’s den and she wanted to make a few pots. It was a great time and Fiona discovered “it’s not as easy as it look” to throw on the wheel. Thanks for a great time guys and Fiona I will get your pots fired and they will be one their was to Scotland. Here are some more pictures and words in Fiona’s immortal prose

Southend 30th Anniversary Bonsai Weekend

A big thanks to Chrissie and Joe for having the Stone Monkey down at Bushukan Bonsai in Hockley Essex for the 30th Anniversary show for Southend Bonsai Society. A great weekend was had and there were some great trees on display. Also a big thanks to Paul and Steve Finch for letting me ask too many questions at the demo’s. I did not come away empty handed as I purchased a lovely contorted Scots Pine that was orginally in the possesion of the master himself Mr Kevin Wilson. The tree has had its main styling done its needs further refining and repotting. I shall post pictures when further work is underway.
